I went to St. Teresa’s with Dermot’s sister Siobhan back in the day and I remember him when his mother would drop him off. He went to class with my brother Jeffrey Canizares and Joe Ahn. Sending my deepest condolences to the McHale family. May he rest easy.

Dermot was my dear friend growing up in the Celtics in Woodside and we both attended St. Teresa’s and St. Francis Prep. We were inseparable as kids because we both loved the game of basketball. We were on the courts day & night and he was a fierce competitor. His sense of humor was unmatched and we were constantly laughing and having fun. I was the shy kid that Dermot looked after and I’ll always be grateful for that. I’ll always remember the sweet, innocent and good times of my childhood with Dermot. My sincerest condolences to the McHale family.

This is heartbreaking news. Had the privilege to coach Dermot at St Teresa’s from 5th-8th grade. He was the best player on the team and a great kid. (A little stubborn) but expected since Sean and I were friends.
To Mrs McHale Eamon Siobhan Kieran. My deepest condolences on behalf of myself and the Hagerman family

So sad to hear this news. The entire family has been a staple of Sunnyside. And if they say they have your back it’s gospel. Great young man that will be missed. Rip dermot.

Dermot was a funny, intelligent and bold friend who always had your back, on and off the court. We got to know each other in grammar and high school, rode in limos together with our prom dates, stayed up until the early mornings laughing about nonsense and talking about life’s goals. Throughout the years life created distance, but I loved our short time and cared deeply for Derm. Rest in peace my friend.

Dermot was one of my best friends from grammar school high school and college. I backpacked through Europe with him. He could always make me laugh. I remember going apartment hunting with Kieran and Declan in North Carolina and coming back to our hotel room only to see Dermot taking a bubble bath while eating a chocolate sunday. I said what are you doing? He said I wanted to see how much I could spoil myself today lol. The stories and laughs I had with him would be enough for three lifetimes. He will be missed and may he rest in peace. My condolences to the entire McHale family.

Such a smart, talented, charismatic, and funny guy. I’ll always remember the drive back to NY after visiting Kieran and the Wilmington crew, and how we laughed for years afterwards recalling how we filled our bellies on the way home with 3 for $1 cookies from McDonalds and the free milk that they had put out for coffee, lol. Those were the days. Godspeed Dermot. Rest In Peace. - Johnny O
