Obituary of Alex Auvers

Alex Auvers November 18,1957 - October 28, 2015 Alex Auvers was born on November 18, 1957 in Brooklyn, New York to Carmen Lydia Lopez and Ismael Lopez. Alex Auvers passed away on October 28, 2015 in the loving care of his family and friends at Dawn Green Hospice. The window from the room where he spent his last days overlooked Sotherby's, which was serendipitous given his lifelong love of antiquities, culture, and fine art. Alex valiantly battled Cancer for nearly two years, which included major surgery and aggressive chemotherapy. He was a highly gifted interior designer, with stints as a fashion model, and a small business entrepreneur. Alex co-owned, Cherubs Antiques and Collectables in Chelsea, Manhattan and later co-owned an eyewear design company in Astoria, Queens. Alex was a ferocious reader, an antique dealer and avid art collector. He was passionate about his work as an interior designer and enjoyed cooking and hosting elaborate dinner parties with exquisite delectables. Everything he did was meticulous with detail and thoughtfulness, Alex's standard of excellence never wavered and he became the primary convener of family and friends. During these gatherings he always created and encouraged a space for social and intellectual conversations about some of the most critical issues and current events of our times. He was well traveled, visiting many countries in Europe and continuing his domestic adventures throughout the US. Locally, he loved Hudson County, Sleepy Hollow and Irving, New York for all their historical treasures that were so close to home Alex was a firm believer in economic and political equality for all; he always advocated for gay and women's rights continuing to inspire others to have a voice. Education was important to Alex; he attended Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) and numerous professional seminars and later obtained a very prestigious certificate from Christie's Auction House in New York City. He was a staunch public space advocate and supporter of many cultural institutions like Wave Hill and the New York Botanical Garden; Alex enjoyed art exhibits and film premieres constantly exposing his family and friends to new bodies of artwork, horticulture and architecture. Above all, what he adored most was spending time with his nine-year-old daughter Ariel Felsher-Auvers who he always encouraged to pursue her dreams through music and singing, performance and acting, ballet and dancing, equestrian horseback riding, and ice-skating in the winter. Alex was the most loving father, caring brother and committed husband. He is survived by his loving life companion of 21 years, Gary Felsher, his beautiful and outspoken daughter Ariel Felsher-Auvers and his beloved sister Cynthia Lopez, Former Commissioner of the New York City Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment. The memorial service will be held Tuesday, November 3, 2015 at 10:30am at St. Bart's Chapel at (51st Street and Park Ave.,) Eddie Venegas , violinist and composer (Sweet Plantain Quartet) will perform a musical solo in Alex's honor. The entombment will be immediately following the church service at Evergreens Cemetery, Brooklyn.
