We just learned of Mike's passing in Feb. 2018. He was not only a terrific person, Mike was extremely talented in teaching autistic children, unique and difficult skill to find. He taught our son Michael to swim, which many would have thought utterly impossible. a tremendous loss. Deepest belated sympathies to the entire family.

I've met some startling people in my life, Schultz, Ginsberg, Edward Murphy... Shanahan
Startling, because you never knew what they'd do or come up with, & startling because it was so much fun & interesting & different & why didn't I think of that ?
Mike did that every time I saw him. Puzzle you, question you, explain to you, annoy the shit out of you, righteously. He was very rarely wrong, & very nearly right.
He could take one side of an argument & tear the other to shreds.........
(amid indignation & hysteria), & then take the side he argued against & win....
(with tears, etc.)
We meet few individuals such as he on our lives' journey. We are lucky to do so.
Without these madmen, these souls that burn, these crazy bastards, we would be less human. We'd miss out.
Thank you, Michael

To The Shanahan Family,
I am so sorry for your loss. Mr Shanahan was a breath of fresh air for all of us.
He always had a kind word or something to make you smile. I had the pleasure of working with Mike at School 12. He definately was of one of our best kept secrets :) What an awesome teacher. I can remember the smell of popcorn coming from his classroom! And sure enough he was there with a big smile on his face making popcorn for his students
Or the time he pulled the miltary truck he bought unto the playground for safe keeping.
May he rest in peace. God Bless his family. He was so proud of his children and loved his wife very much. Maryann Marren

Although I got to know Mike later in our lives, it only took a moment to realize what a special and caring man he was. I will deeply miss the times we shared. Be it in New York, Amagansett, the Redwoods or Wherever. Especially our last trip to Tulum, Mexico. Mike and I bonded down in Tulum and I am so very happy we shared some amazing moments on that trip. Swimming with whale sharks, climbing the pyramid at Coba, swimming in the Cenote caves or just having a mango jalapeno margarita on the beach. So many smiles and heart felt moments. My deepest condolences to his family. Mike will be deeply missed by so many. He gave so much Joy and laughter to those of us lucky enough to know him. Mike, thank you for being a friend. I will forever remember and miss you.

Mike was my best and dearest friend in high school. I only attended Xavier for two years and then moved to California with my family, but those two years were extremely special to me, in no small part because I shared so much of them with Mike. We got to reconnect a few years ago through Facebook and have had the chance to see each other several times since then in Manhattan Beach (CA). I know how much he loved Southern California, and we were hoping to see each other this weekend since he was on his way out to L.A. I'm having such a hard time believing all this . . . My love and condolences to your mother, children, sisters, and all whose lives you've touched, Mike. We'll miss you incredibly but we're all so much better off for the gifts you've given us . . . -- Paul

I can't stop crying because from 6th to 7th grade 2006-2007 in school 12 he did so much for me and the people in my class.. He opened ours eyes to many other things that we would not have even cared about if it wasn't for him. We used to argue with him because we did not know the significance of what he was trying to teach us back then but I definitely understand it now. He was more than a teacher than all of us. He will always be loved, admired and remembered.
