Obituary of John Abbott
John Joseph "Jack" Abbott, 84, of Woodside, Queens NY went home to the Lord on March 6, 2024 peacefully in his sleep after a long illness. He was buried at a private service on March 12 in Calvary Cemetery at his family's grave site.
A memorial mass will be held at St. Teresa's Roman Catholic Church in Woodside, NY at 11 am on Saturday, May 18, 2024. It will also be streamed on FB or YouTube www.YouTube.com/@stteresawoodside
Jack was born in New York City to John F. and Barbara H. Abbott on January 6, 1940. He attended St. Teresa's grammar school, then Power Memorial High School, graduating in 1957. He attended various colleges including the University of Oklahoma and NYU.
Jack began his work life at Nabisco as a computer technician when computers used punch cards. His real love was music as he managed local bands and signed New York Central to RCA in 1972. Other jobs included public relations, writing, editing and sales.
As a young man, he built engines and raced cars, once sponsored by Ford. Fishing was also a lifelong hobby, along with raising parakeets, record collecting, writing, plus rooting for the home teams, Yankees, Mets and NY Islanders.
On May 1, 1984, he married Mary Lou (née. Bablin) at the Queens courthouse and the following year on his birthday, they had a church wedding at St Teresa's in Woodside. The couple lived in the neighborhood, but also traveled to Lithuania, the western US and enjoyed annual visits to a camp in Vermont for fishing and fun.
Jack is survived by his wife, Mary, nieces, nephews and dear friends. Predeceased by his parents, John and Barbara Abbott, his brother Bill and sister in law, Teresa, and sister Jane.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Teresa's Church, VNS Hospice or Child Mind Institute.
His wife, Mary wishes to extend gratitude to all those who reached out with visits, phone calls, texts, prayers and good wishes during the final years of his life.
