Dear Eileen, Victor and Olivia,
So sorry about the loss of your father, father-in-law and grandfather Charles. For a year when I was 5 or 6 he was a "brother" to Barbara, Gus and me since his wonderful mother, our Aunt Elma, stayed with us in Islip for a year bringing Charles and Elaine with her, while our mother was in the hospital. He was always a quiet, intelligent, kind person, with a wonderful dry wit even then. And I thought he was a very good person.
He was also dutiful, even as a small boy. During subsequent visits to us after my mother returned I remember one summer day when we were all enjoying ourselves in the water at the beach and in the middle of our fun Aunt Elma summoned Charles since he had to return home in Corona to Deliver His Newspapers! I felt so badly for him, but without hesitation he obeyed. He always did his job to the best of his ability, even then.
The church was very important to him. I remember on one visit when he, Elaine and I went to a service at St. Mary's, the Catholic Church in East Islip. As soon as we entered Charles took off with our only Prayer Book! In those days when the service was all in Latin, it was Essential, especially for a Methodist like me, to follow what was happening during the mysterious rites. But the rule, according to Charles, was that girls and boys had to sit separately! Of course he didn't tell us that until afterwards!
After his military service and his education when he had a job in NYC he often arranged to have lunch with our cousins Janet and Carol, and once Elaine was able to join us on a visit home from West Virginia. He was a wonderful host and always brought us Lotto Scratch-Off cards. Once I won $2.
I was so glad for him when he met Regina, and I attended their beautiful wedding, where he read and spoke extensively. Can't remember what he said but he took his vows seriously and was a wonderful husband to Regina and later a wonderful father to Eileen. If you have ever had the pleasure of meeting Eileen you can see what a very good job he did.
And later, when his mother lived in Assisted Living, he was a constant visitor and followed all of her wishes, no matter how difficult, even when she was in the hospital with her final illness. He was a loving, dutiful, responsible son to the very end.
And this quality of caring is reflected in how well Eileen cared for him and for her wonderful mother, Regina to the very end as well.
Charles was well loved by all who knew him and we will all miss him,.
Love,
Dorothy
