Obituary of Ann Teresa Sherlock

Ann Teresa Sherlock (née Honan), 91, recently of Rutherford NJ and born on April 12, 1930 in Baltard, Doonbeg, Co. Clare, Ireland, passed away on January 11th after a long battle with Lewy Body dementia. She will be remembered with love and admiration by her three children, Kevin Sherlock, Geralyn DeMayo, Thomas Sherlock, their spouses Sheila Sherlock, Jack DeMayo and Marlyn Sherlock and her grandchildren Brenna and Annie Sherlock, Jacquelyn, Erin and Joseph DeMayo, Morgan and Tierra Sherlock. Teresa will be sorely missed by her surviving five sisters and their spouses: Mary Carty, Brigid and Michael Keegan, Dympna and Matthew Slattery, Monica and Patrick Corbett and Rita Honan and her sole surviving brother and his spouse: Patrick and Anne Honan. Teresa, who liked to tease that she was from Ireland via New York was raised with 11 siblings on a farm near the Atlantic Ocean by her parents, Mary Anne (née Keane) and John Honan. A courageous and adventurous woman, she began working in a general store in nearby Kilkee at the age of 14 followed by London, England at 21. At 26 years of age, she sailed to NYC by herself and worked as an operator for the phone company. After relocating to Chicago, she returned to New York in the late 50’s. This proud yet humble Irish woman, faithful to her Roman Catholic upbringing was a beautiful person who always wore a smile and brandished a sharp wit. She loved Irish dancing and met the love of her life, Tommie Sherlock at City Center soon after returning to NY City. They quickly married and spent seven happy years together full of love and joy in Queens: Jackson Heights, Sunnyside then Woodside. She discovered her own strength, when, due to the sudden unexpected death of her husband she resolved to raise three children on her own. She ensured that her children received a Catholic education and an education acquired from traveling. She made sure that they never were left wanting despite a constantly tight budget. Teresa was a generous soul who embraced all with warmth and joy. She lent her time and attention without hesitation to volunteer within her parish as well as share her creature comforts and food with those who were less fortunate. She welcomed new residents to the neighborhood and often hosted travelers and family from both near and far -always ready to offer a hot “cuppa tay” or a cocktail. We lovingly referred to her as the ‘matriarch’ for she managed to find the time and ability to stay in touch and bring together so many people. The Honans, the Sherlocks and countless friends and neighbors were all her family. Teresa, Mother, because of your generosity, warmth, sense of humor, courage, strength and never-ending faith you have bestowed so many people with countless happy memories. In the Irish language that is your heritage we say ‘go raibh maith agat’: Thank you. You leave us all enriched. Visitation will be Friday, January 14 from 4-8PM at Edward D. Lynch Funeral Home, Inc, 43-07 Queens Boulevard, Sunnyside, NY. Funeral Mass will be held 10:15 am on Saturday, January 15, 2022 at St. Mary's RC Church (Winfield), 70-20 47th Avenue, Woodside, NY.
